Methodology · How we rank
The Pickleball Asia Standard
We don’t rank on taste. We rank on evidence — declared openly, governed by a dated rubric, and granted by a human. This is how a player, venue, coach or paddle earns its place, and what every mark on this site actually means.
01 · Our principles
Three commitments behind every ranking
Evidence over opinion
Every placement traces to a dated, checkable source — a tournament result, a recognised certification, a verifiable facility. No vibes, no guesswork.
Neutral by design
We take no pay-to-rank. Grading is firewalled from any commercial relationship. A partner and a non-partner are measured on exactly the same rubric.
Accountable & revocable
A human grants every mark, and we can remove it the moment reality changes. The standard stays honest because it can always be corrected.
02 · Two signals
Identity and merit are never the same thing
Every listing carries up to two independent signals. We keep them deliberately separate so neither can be mistaken for the other.
The Verification Tick
Orange = confirmed by a human. Grey = not yet confirmed. It answers one question — “is this really them?” — and says nothing about quality. Binary, and revocable.
The Grade
An evidence-based tier showing how a listing measures against our rubric. It answers “how good, by the standard?” Published openly, governed by a dated methodology, independent of any commercial tie.
Why separate them? A venue can be verified (orange) yet sit at Listed grade — and that’s exactly what keeps the system honest. Verification is never for sale; grades are never automatic.
03 · The grade bands
Four tiers — a standard, not a star rating
We don’t use five-star ratings. Stars read as crowd opinion and inflate until they stop meaning anything. Our tiers read like a rating standard — instantly legible to marketers, with the authority of a defined benchmark behind each one.
World Class
World ClassSets the regional benchmark.
Reads as “the best in Asia.” Reserved, hard to earn, small in number.
Elite
EliteExcellent & nationally significant.
Reads as “top-tier.”
Verified
VerifiedMeets the full Pickleball Asia standard.
Reads as “trusted / safe choice.” The dependable core of the directory.
Listed
ListedOn the map, not yet fully assessed.
Reads as “emerging.” The on-ramp for new entrants.
04 · What we measure
A distinct rubric for each category
The thing being judged is different in each case, so the rubric is too. These are the public criteria; the precise weightings are held in a dated internal rubric so rankings stay defensible.
Players
Ranked on results, not reputation.
- Verified competitive results dated
- Level of competition PPA/UPA/MLP/national
- Recency of form weighted
- Consistency across events trend
Venues
Ranked on the player’s actual experience.
- Facility quality courts/surface
- Accessibility & booking real path
- Community & programming leagues/play
- Standards & upkeep condition
Coaches & Academies
Ranked on credentials and track record.
- Recognised certification PPR/IPTPA/NROC
- Coaching experience years/outcomes
- Specialisation clarity juniors/comp
- Ecosystem standing regional
Paddles follow the same discipline — assessed on performance characteristics, build quality and suitability-by-level, against a published equipment rubric. Certification is the floor, not the ceiling: proven outcomes carry the grade upward.
05 · How a mark is granted
From evidence to grade — and back out again
We gather sources
Dated results, certifications and verifiable facts are collected and recorded against the listing.
Rubric applied
The category rubric is applied consistently. No single relationship can move a score.
A person signs off
Every grade and every tick is granted by hand. Nothing is automatic, nothing self-promotes.
Kept current
Marks are revisited as new evidence arrives, and revoked or re-graded when reality changes.
06 · In context
How the two signals appear together
Grade on the right, identity tick beside the name — shown here on real academies and coaches. Note the honest default: unproven listings stay grey and Listed until the evidence says otherwise.
07 · Our neutrality promise
What we will — and won’t — do
- We will grade partners and non-partners on the identical rubric.
- We will publish the criteria and point to the dated methodology if a ranking is challenged.
- We won’t sell a grade, a tick, or a position. Ever.
- We won’t let advertising, sponsorship or membership influence placement.
- We will correct or revoke any mark when the evidence changes.
A bridge, not a standard for sale. The directory is only worth something if every mark on it is earned.
